A Quick Introduction To Buenos Aires’ Best Areas To Stay
Buenos Aires has a number of different districts, each characterized by historic buildings and charm. Some are more bohemian in flavor while others are more upmarket. Whether you’re looking for wild nightlife or somewhere more relaxed, there’s no doubt you’ll find a district in Buenos Aires to suit you.
The following are the best areas to stay in town, where you are better off basing yourself.
PALERMO SOHO – Certainly one of the best places to stay in Buenos Aires if you’re in town for the nightlife. The area is crammed full of dining spots and bars attracting locals and visitors alike. It’s a stylish, fashionable kind of place, where historic, two-story houses have been turned into designer stores and chic boutiques strewn along leafy boulevards with charming city parks to stroll around to match. While bustling in the evening, it’s a chilled, almost sleepy, district in the daytime with its laid-back cafes and cobbled streets to wander.
PALERMO HOLLYWOOD – Another sub-district of Palermo, this area has been given the name “Hollywood” because of the TV studios that set up shop here in the mid-1990s (as well as music studios and radio stations). As such, and similar to its neighbor, Palermo Soho, there’s a creative vibe to this place – think walls daubed with colorful street art and a slew of hip places to eat and drink. Coupled with little boutiques, markets and and nightlife, this is a lively area in Buenos Aires.
SAN TELMO – Boho San Telmo is an absolute charmer. This hipster-friendly spot also happens to be one of the city’s most picturesque. In fact, San Telmo is Buenos Aires’ oldest barrio (district). With its winding cobbled streets, colorful historic buildings, and compact plazas, you may even spot an impromptu performance of the city’s most famous export – the tango. There’s also a good flea market to browse as well as many antique dealers and, of course, food galore.
RECOLETA – One of the most affluent areas of Buenos Aires, Recoleta may not have the bustling nightlife of other barrios, but it definitely has grandeur. This timeless area, situated just north east of the city centre, is home to old, ornate palaces and mansions on par with Parisian architecture. This place oozes money, but it’s not just about the beautiful buildings. Here you’ll also find museums, boutiques, galleries and the famous La Recoleta Cemetery, the final resting place of Eva Peron to name but one of its notable residents.
MICROCENTRO – Known as Centro, this is Buenos Aires’ CBD. As well as being the financial hub of the Argentine capital, it’s also the modern center of the city, complete with skyscrapers, banks, office blocks and plenty of traffic. Here you’ll find a good selection of attractions – the Plaza de Mayo, the Obelisk, the Eva Peron Memorial, and the Radio Tower. Add to this a number shopping and eating opportunities, and Microcentro is arguably one of the best neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, not least because of its fantastic transport connections.
PUERTO MADERO – The former dockside area of Puerto Madero has seen some extensive regeneration in recent years. The result is an impressive, modern district, repurposing old red brick warehouses and industrial buildings into fancy apartments and high-end steakhouses. There’s actually a wildlife reserve situated in Puerto Madero which is a popular spot for joggers and families alike to get a breath of fresh air away from the city streets. Also situated here is the Puente de la Mujer – an eye-catching suspension bridge across the docks themselves.
BELGRANO – Possibly the wealthiest and most fashionable area in Buenos Aires, Belgrano is centered on Avenida Cabildo, the place to come for designer fashion and upscale boutiques. Also in this multicultural neighborhood (home to a dialect of German known as Belgranodeutsch) is Buenos Aires’ Chinatown, complete with street food and specialty food stalls. Rather than being packed full of tourist sights, Belgrano is more of a neighborhood to explore on foot. Here you can visit Barrancas de Belgrano, a hillside park where people practice their tango skills.
Other neighborhoods in Buenos Aires
There are several other neighborhoods that make for a great base when visiting Buenos Aires – it is a big city, after all.
First of all, there’s Villa Crespo. This is an under-the-radar, hip corner of the city. It’s got an artsy atmosphere and an exciting nightlife scene, complete with concept eateries, speakeasy bars, and cool cafes to hop between during the day. Still much more of a local neighborhood than other barrios in Buenos Aires, Villa Crespo is also home to a sizable Jewish community. That means Kosher food and synagogues, including the historic Templo Libertad.
In addition, there’s Retiro. This waterside district, situated in the northeast of the city, is a quiet sort of spot filled with tranquil cafes and interesting art galleries. It’s also here that you’ll find the Torre Monumental, an icon of the area, as well as the Plaza General San Martin, and the grand Retiro Station, the main train station in the city. While the station area can be a little dodgy at night, the transport connections are great, and the daytime waterside strolling is relaxing.
Now that you’re clued up on some of the best districts in the city, read on to see my selection of the best Airbnbs in Buenos Aires. All the properties I mention are listed on Airbnb, some are listed on Airbnb, VRBO and Booking.com. In that case, I have included a link to VRBO and Booking.com as they are my choice for accommodation bookings.
