Finding good Stellenbosch accommodation is easier than you’d imagine.
This lovely city in the Cape Winelands, about one hour drive from Cape Town, is an absolute must visit. While many will tell you you can visit day trips from Cape Town, I recommend spending a few days in there to fully enjoy everything it has to offer.
A university town, oak lined Stellenbosch is well known for its beautiful buildings (here you’ll find many examples of Cape Dutch architecture), museums and art galleries, wine bars and good restaurants, and for the thriving nightlife. At a stone’s throw from it you will find breathtaking mountains with plenty of hiking opportunities; national parks and lots and lots of vineyards where you will be able to taste delicious wines.
The good news is that you won’t have any troubles finding good hotels in Stellenbosch. Since I have been there a few times and tried several places, I have selected the best hotels in Stellenbosch, as well as a handful of Airbnbs. Rustic and modern, luxurious and classy, there is something for everyone here!

Stellenbosch Accommodation: The Best Hotels In Stellenbosch By Budget
No matter what your budget is, you are bound to find some great places to stay in Stellenbosch. In general, most luxury and boutique hotels are a bit out of the center of town, typically in the wine estates. The center and its immediate surroundings is where you’ll find mid-range and budget accommodation options, with good guest houses, Airbnbs and apartments for rent.
If you plan to stay in one of the luxury hotels out of town, rent a car to move around. Parking is not an issue in Stellenbosch.
Luxury Stellenbosch Accommodation
Stellenbosch has a fantastic range of luxury and boutique hotels, most of them outside the center of town. You could opt to stay in one of the many fabulous wine estates to be completely immersed in the vineyards. They usually have a restaurant too – so that you can pair your stay with fine dining for an even better experience.
The following is a selection of the best luxury and boutique places to stay in Stellenbosch.
Lanzerac Hotel and Spa
Lanzerac is one of the best wine estates in Stellenbosch. Wine tasting there is absolutely fabulous. Let’s talk about the hotel though! Lanzerac definitely has one of the best hotels in Stellenbosch.
The most basic room measures a whopping 40 square meters; it is plush and cozy and has a fabulous, large bathroom with the most lavish bathtub to take a relaxing bath at the end of a day of exploring. If your budget allows it, opt for the suite – it’s massive, and comes with its own porch facing the beautiful garden.
Hotel facilities include two pools (why settle for one?!), a spa center, a fitness center, a restaurant and a bar – where you can sit sipping a glass of Chardonnay while admiring the view. Breakfast is included in the price and – needless to say – it’s fabulous! Wi-fi works perfectly well.
Spier Hotel
This is a wine estate you can’t help to love and it comes with one of the nicest hotels in Stellenbosch.
Spier strives to run all of its activities in the most environmentally and socially inclusive way, recycling most of the water it consumes; funding projects that support young local artists – don’t miss the art studio and the art gallery on the grounds, with paintings decorating the restaurant, and sculptures scattered around the garden; and obviously producing fantastic wines.
With so much to look forward to, you won’t be disappointed to know that even the most basic room at Spier measures 60 square meters (the largest is 110 square meters). All rooms face the perfectly kept garden and come with a spacious bathroom and a fireplace, for those cold evenings. They even have a dining table, in case you want to oder room service.
The hotel counts with a nice pool, a spa, a bar and a restaurant – Eight. Breakfast is included in the price. Wi-Fi works well in all common areas and in the rooms.
Majeka House
Majeka is one of the best restaurants in Stellenbosch, famous for the delicious food it serves, prepared with local, seasonal organic ingredients. The good news is that its is one of the nicest hotels in Stellenbosch too! Completely immersed in nature, about 10 minutes drive from the center of town, you won’t want to miss the chance to stay there.
Rooms at Majeka House are all very spacious. Some of them face the mountains, others overlook the garden and the pool – but all have nice chairs and tables outside, so you can sip your morning coffee while enjoying the fresh morning air (oh, and the views). Some rooms even come with a Victorian style bath-tub!
The hotel counts with two swimming pools – one is indoor, so you can still enjoy it even on colder days; a bar and a spa and wellness center. You can also count on good Wi-Fi.

With design apartments of various sizes, De Haas is one of the best luxury Stellenbosch accommodation options. You can pick among two different locations in the center of town, from where you will be able to easily walk to the many restaurants and bars.
Prices start at $129 USD for a one bedroom apartment which is perfect for a couple – I stayed in one of them and found it to be incredibly comfortable, not to mention spacious and fully equipped. The two-bedroom apartment is perfect for a family or a group of friends.
All apartments have a kitchen and a dining room, so you can cook your meals and eat in; there is a living room with a comfortable couch and a massive TV (and one in the bedroom too!) and a state-of-the-art bathroom. At easy walking distance from Dorp Street and the center of town, this is one of the nicest mid-range priced hotels in Stellenbosch. Rooms aren’t the largest, but they have everything you need for a comfortable stay – and they are spotless. Family rooms are available for travelers with children,

Budget Stellenbosch Accommodation
Who said you have to pay a fortune to sleep comfortably? This certainly isn’t the case in Stellenbosch, where you will find a great range of budget options that combine good rooms, good location and stylish decor. Some of the best budget places to stay in Stellenbosch are located slightly outside the center of town, but still close enough for you to be able to walk anywhere.
The following is a selection of the best ones.
Laanhof Victorian House
Literally at a stone’s throw from Dorp Street and all the most famous attractions in town, this bed and breakfast counts with just three rooms, but all of them are spacious, comfortable and spotless. What’s incredible is that such beautiful rooms come at such a convenient price.

Baruch Guesthouse on Lovell
At 20 minutes walk from the main street, this guesthouse certainly is one of the best finds. Rooms aren’t the most spacious, but they are absolutely lavishly decorated, and even work-friendly (should you ever need to check your emails while away). If you fancy some extra space opt for the superior suite. It comes with a kitchenette and there even is a washing machine.
The guesthouse counts with a nice swimming pool and breakfast is included in the price.
9 On Drommedaries
30 minutes out of the center of town, this guest house is a perfect combination of spacious rooms which are also stylish, comfortable and very budget friendly at the same time. Rooms have a kitchenette so you can prepare a quick meal every now and then. Guests have access to a large, beautifully kept garden too.
Best Airbnbs in Stellenbosch
If you are a fan of Airbnb, you will be happy to know that there are some great ones in Stellenbosch. The one where I stayed last time I visited – a room in a traditional Cape Dutch home on Dorp Street, whose owners are real stars and where the price also included breakfast – is unfortunately not available at the moment. However, there is a very good selection you can pick from.
The following are the best Airbnbs in Stellenbosch.
Victorian Home Dorp Street
Walter and Colleen are the lovely owners of this traditional house in Cape Dutch style on Dorp Street, the main street in Stellenbosch. Their house is beautiful, and they will welcome you there as a real guest of honor, sharing their local tips for a wonderful experience.
Rooms are comfortable, spacious and spotless. You may come across one of the cats roaming about the lush garden, and you will enjoy a scrumptious breakfast complete with eggs, freshly baked bread, freshly squeezed orange juice, fruit and even home made granola. It’s actually much better than at most luxury hotels. If I were to go back, I’d have no doubts to stay there!
Studio on Church
This studio apartment is perfect for a solo traveler or for a couple. It’s very stylish, equipped with anything you may need for a comfortable stay, and centrally located steps away from the main historic church in Stellenbosch, so that you can easily access all the attractions. It’s also incredibly budget friendly!
Keep in mind that the church bell rings regularly and that such central location comes with a downside, as there is quite a bit of traffic and noise in that part of town!
Dorp Street Apartment
Perfect for a family or a small group of friends since it has two bedrooms, this apartment is located on the most historic street in the city. Guests can enjoy using the full kitchen – there even is a dishwasher – and sitting in the balcony for a sunset drink.
As the use of Wi-Fi is limited, this may not be a good option for business travelers.
Chick Apartment in Prime Location
A slightly more expensive option compared to the other apartments I have mentioned, but to be fair this place is spacious and with two bedrooms and two bathrooms you can easily share the price if you are traveling with friends. The living room, full kitchen and patio are perfect for a night in – definitely one of the best Stellenbosch accommodation options.
