Are you traveling to Italy and looking for the Best Airbnbs In Rome? This post has you covered!
Rome is a beautiful city with a fabulous range of places to visit and activities; a thriving cultural life and an even better art scene; not to mention delicious food, lots of shopping opportunities and thriving nightlife. This is one of the most visited cities in the world, and for very good reasons!
The Eternal City is also Italy’s biggest city, and it can get overwhelming – especially to first time visitors. With this in mind, picking the right place to stay in Rome is definitely key to having a good experience.
While different locations in the city have different perks, not all are suitable to tourists, because too far from the main attractions or because lacking good accommodation options. In other cases, accommodation options abound – but being Rome one of the most expensive cities in Europe, they may well blow your budget.
This is where Airbnbs in Rome come into play. There are many excellent ones, they are usually very good value for money, and some of them are simply charming.
If you are not sure where to start looking for your Airbnb in Rome, worry not! Here I share a quick overview of the best areas to stay in Rome, and select some incredible Airbnbs in Rome.
A Quick Intro To Rome’s Best Areas To Stay
The ancient city of Rome has long been divided into different districts, some as old as the city itself, some newer. Whether you want to stay in the heart of the city close to its landmarks and monuments, or if you feel like a traditional slice of life, you’ll find it in the exciting Italian capital.
These are the best neighborhoods in town:
MONTI – Situated between the Colosseum and Via Nazionale and close to the historic center of Rome, Monti is a hip and happening sort of neighborhood. It’s a great option for first time visitors to the city. From here, it’s just a quick metro stop from Termini and an easy walking distance to the Roman Forum and Colosseum itself. Monti is the former home of the Roman-era gladiators, but it became an artists’ enclave in the 1930s. Today it’s awash with cool coffee shops and trendy bars.
PRATI AND VATICAN – Visitors to Rome won’t be staying in the Vatican City itself, but the neighboring district of Prati, northwest of the city center, is a good place to stay if you do plan on a visit. While Prati itself is a relaxed district, it’s just a stone’s throw from all the sights and museums of the Vatican. There are numerous traditional bakeries and old bars to stop by, where you can sample some of Rome’s gastronomic treats. Nightlife fans should also head to the area’s well known jazz bars and music venues that dot the district.
HISTORIC CENTER – The Historic Center, or Centro Storico, is also an ideal place to stay in Rome for first time visitors. Staying in this most ancient part of the “Eternal City” itself puts you within easy strolling distance of the best of the city’s most iconic attractions. Naturally, it’s busy with tourists, so you can expect crowds. But you’ll be on the doorstep of landmarks such as the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and Campo de’ Fiori. The area is also awash with eateries, some of which are Michelin starred.
OSTIENSE AND TESTACCIO – South of the city center, the neighboring districts of Ostiense and Testaccio make up the former industrial heart of 19th-century Rome. Ostiense in particular is a historically working-class neighborhood, whereas Testaccio is home to historic sites, such as part of the Roman-era city walls, the Mouth of Truth and the three-thousand-year-old Pyramid of Cestius. In these twin districts, there’s a wealth of bars, affordable trattorie, and shopping to be done, all of which is well-connected to the rest of the city by bus.
TRASTEVERE – Trastevere is located on the opposite side of the River Tiber from Testaccio. This lively area is a warren of narrow cobbled streets where countless bars, cafes and restaurants can be found. It’s a bohemian district that is virtually the center of Rome’s nightlife scene. Traditionally, it’s a working-class district, something that can still be seen in its rustic and down to earth streets. Staying in this part of Rome means you’ll get to experience a slice of real, modern-day Roman life, away from the crowds that gather further towards the center of the city.
AVENTINE HILL – One of Rome’s famous seven hills, on and around which the original city was built, Aventine Hill is all about the romantic side of the Italian capital. As a result of its hillside location, this is a great spot to watch sunsets across the city and glimpse views out across St Peter’s Basilica. One great vantage point for this is the Giardino degli Aranci, a sprawling orange grove. Time in this primarily residential area can be spent wandering its charming streets, exploring its monasteries and churches, and generally enjoying a slower pace of life.
ESQUILINO – This rough-around-the-edges neighborhood comprises of the area just south of Termini Train Station atop the Esquiline Hill (another of Rome’s famous hills). It’s a multicultural area of the city with Asian and African eateries and stores catering to its various communities. The area immediately close to Termini itself may not be the safest place to stay in Rome, but head further into Esquilino, near San Giovanni, to discover a much more local neighborhood packed full of character and affordable accommodation.
